The topic for this podcast is DMT (dimethyltryptamine) a psychedelic substance that’s found throughout nature and within the body.
It’s a substance that, after more scientific enquiry, could bridge the gap between science and spirituality due to the life-changing, and some would say, mystical experiences it can facilitate.
Dr Rick Strassman is a specialist in psychiatry and psychopharmacology. He’s somewhat of a legend in the psychedelic realms for the research that he undertook in the 1990s. He was the first to legally administer psychedelics to people in the United States in decades, giving dozens of volunteers DMT numerous of times over the course of 5 years. His research has been regarded as kicking off the “psychedelic renaissance”. He has published nearly thirty peer-reviewed scientific papers, and has served as a reviewer for several psychiatric research journals.
His book, ‘DMT: The Spirit Molecule’ recounts the research process and documents the remarkable experiences volunteers had under the influence of DMT. Half of these psychedelic journeys included conversing or interacting with otherworldly, godlike beings, feelings of overwhelming significance and euphoria, kaleidoscopic imagery and powerful personal insights.
He co-produced a documentary, DMT: The Spirit Molecule which is available on Netflix.
His most recent book looks into the parallels between the psychedelic states induced by DMT and the religious experiences expressed in the Hebrew bible.
